John 10:1-10
For every good thing that God has made, humanity, under the influence of sin, has created a counterfeit. We trade genuine love for selfish lust, healthy desire for chronic greed, and lasting joy for temporary pleasures. Every time we choose the counterfeit over the real thing, the image of God in us becomes a little more obscured.
Jesus calls us back into loving relationship with God. That is why He invites, but never compels, us to follow Him. The Shepherd calls out to the lost sheep of the world, and those who have ears to hear respond to His voice. We who are weary from living in a hurried and driven world are led to green pastures and invited to rest. We who are hungry from a steady diet of things that cannot satisfy the aching in our souls are given bread that fills us with hope. The Shepherd has come that we might have life—real life—and have it to the full. Jesus is calling.
