James 3:1-6
I find it interesting that James says, “Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect” (v. 2).
James is alluding to how truly powerful our language is. To “never be at fault,” or to “not offend” (KJV), or to “make no mistakes” (NRSV) in what we say, is to assert control over ourselves—our heart, mind, and spirit. After all, Jesus said our words come from what’s truly within us (Matthew 15:18).
As we embrace habits that allow God to form us into His likeness, our speech is affected. Our lives will generate life-giving language as we welcome His transformation of our entire being. The Spirit-permeated power of our words can move conversations, situations, relationships, and even our very lives—for His glory—ultimately furthering God’s kingdom here on earth as it is in heaven.
What we speak becomes a powerful reflection of God at work within us, perfecting us, and keeping our “whole body in check” as we daily surrender our lives to Him.
