Hebrews 4:9-16

Most little kids have an item they are partial towards. Usually, it’s a blanket or a stuffed friend. Such items represent security and peace. They calm and they soothe. When that item disappears, trouble is most definitely in the forecast.

That need for security and peace doesn’t end with childhood. While most grownups don’t have a blanket or a stuffed friend to which they cling, there are things we adults hold on to steadfastly. Some might joke that their vice is their daily caffeine intake. Others might find comfort in their routine. While others might have a special place that soothes them.

We tend to gravitate toward things we can’t physically hold close. The writer of Hebrews encourages Christ followers to cling to their faith, more specifically their risen Savior for that sense of peace and security. The author goes on to remind us that our High Priest is very familiar with our very human insecurities. Because of that empathy, we can boldly approach the throne of grace and cling desperately to the hope we find there.
