Working While Waiting

James 5:7-12

Years ago in a gift shop I purchased a small wooden plaque bearing an unusual saying. Reproduced in a Gothic font, it apparently was meant to resemble a religious motto. It read: “Everything cometh to him who waiteth as long as he who waiteth worketh like heck while he waiteth.”

An amusing saying, but did you know that as we serve God and sometimes must briefly pause, we should not wait while doing nothing?

James uses this idea in his illustration of a farmer waiting for the right rainfall. However, since there’s always so much to do on a farm, he would hardly be completely idle while he waited. And it’s the same in our service for God—there are always things to do while we wait.

How about you? Are you waiting for some reason? Perhaps it’s an answer to a prayer, or maybe something else. Yet whatever it is, the Lord’s work is always there and waiting during your hiatus. Once it’s over and we resume our work, then we can stride forward with renewed purpose—for our benefit and His glory.
