Psalm 127:1-5
I’ve been pastoring in various capacities for nearly 25 years. I’ve been through one undergraduate and two master’s degrees, dozens of conventions and countless trainings. I’ve been in seminars, webinars, Zoom sessions, and chat rooms. I’ve read hundreds of articles, emails, newsletters, blogs, and infographics. After two-and-a-half decades . . . I find myself wondering.
I wonder how many of the church growth strategies, business-based leadership tips, church systems models, and management methods I’ve encountered are really based on the kingdom of God. I wonder why so many of the articles I’ve read and presentations I’ve seen don’t really even mention God. I wonder at the amount of resources we’ve spent over the years and whether those resources could be used differently.
I wonder if Psalm 127 could speak a hard truth to us: “Unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain” (v. 1). I wonder what my local church could look like if the Lord did something new in our midst. I wonder what it would mean for the world if the Lord built the house.
