God’s GPS

Psalm 119:105-112

I am horrible with directions. It is so bad that I panic internally when someone starts giving me verbal directions. I usually nod along desperately, hoping to receive the actual address to put into my phone’s GPS.

The Hebrew word translated as “feet” in verse 5 is actually singular. This well-known passage could be rewritten to read: “Your word is a lamp for my feet, illuminating my path one step at a time.”

It can be tempting to want an overview of our lives as if they were one big GPS-inspired road trip: How many miles to the destination? Will there be a toll? Where can I stop for food and gas? The psalmist is reminding us that guidance down the narrow road that leads to life requires trusting God one turn, or one footstep, at a time. We don’t have to see the full picture to obey.

The revelation of God will never fail to provide the guidance and direction we need most.
