Psalm 20:1-9
Everyone wants to be successful. Some are successful by the world’s standards. They have the modern equivalent of “horses and chariots,” things that symbolize status, power, and wealth. It can be hard for such people to trust in God, having convinced themselves that their good fortune is a result of their own competence and hard work. Perhaps this is why Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3).
Those who suffer and mourn, who are weak and powerless, and who aren’t “living their best life” are more acutely aware of their need for God.
We can trust that God has our best interests at heart and will work all things together for the good of those who love Him and who are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). There is no shame in admitting that we are struggling and need God’s help. Those who trust in their own wisdom and power will eventually fall, but those who trust in the Lord will rise up and stand firm.
