Romans 8:1-9
Romans 8 is filledwith references to pneuma, the Greek word translated “Spirit.” In this pivotal passage from Romans, the apostle Paul describes what life “according to the Spirit” might look like.
These people who have been born of the Spirit, who are being continually filled by the Wind of God as it moves, breathes, and gives life, have different priorities than those who remain “in the flesh.” They live according to God’s desires and experience life and peace because it is the very Breath of God that enlivens and sustains them.
They belong to Christ because the Spirit is His Spirit. They are enlivened, not by the old letter of the law, but by the Lord and Life-giver: the Holy Spirit.
My childhood was spent listening to sermons encouraging folks to “move on to Romans 8!” The older I get, the more I’m coming to understand that life “in the Spirit” is the only way to be truly alive.
May that same Spirit give you new life today!
