Mark 7:5-13
The tradition of Corban (devotion to God) served a very specific purpose in Jewish tradition. Many people, however, misused it to serve their own interest. These people avoided taking care of their parents. Jesus called them out for their hypocrisy.
We need to remember that as Christians we have many opportunities and responsibilities to help others. We should not misuse God’s Word in order to, or in a way in which we, neglect our families. Instead, we should use every opportunity possible to represent Christ to our families. Our calling is to share the love of Christ with the world—that includes our family. We can’t neglect those who God has blessed us.
We have the amazing privilege to serve God in all things that we do. Our families are part of that equation. We should honor God by living our lives in the love of Christ. That love flows through us and into the lives of our families and others around us.
