John 8:31-40
True freedom can only be received as a gift. As adults we sometimes hesitate to receive gifts, thinking instead about what is earned or deserved. Children have no such struggle. Rarely do they question if they have earned or deserved the gift. Instead they grasp hold of the gift, sometimes so tightly that one cannot pry it out of their hands.
Jesus offers those who believe in Him this gift of freedom found in Jesus, who is the Truth. Freedom from sin could not be found in the Law; Jesus alone gave freedom from the power of sin. Jesus called those who authentically desired to follow in His footsteps to continue, to remain, and to dwell in the Word. In order to do this, one must hold fast to the Word, never letting go just as God will not let go of us.
Just as a child grips tightly to the offered gift, we too must hold fast to Jesus, who is the Truth. It is in Him that we find our freedom, the true freedom of Christ.
